Classical training. Modern vision. Mixed-media mastery.
Explore the Work
Jonathan Chorn comes from clay workers, on both sides of the family. His grandmother and uncle on his father's side were both potters. He played with clay before walking, in his mother's pottery arts studio.
In high school, he studied at The Art Ballet Drama & Music school in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, exploring a vast array of artistic disciplines.
In 2001, he began studying at The Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy, completing a rigorous three-year programme in classical realist figurative sculpture.
He attained a position as personal sculpture assistant to Richard MacDonald, the world-renowned figurative contemporary sculptor in Monterey, California.
Jonathan continues to develop modern, boundary-pushing concepts, utilizing mixed media.
"Sculpture is not about the form alone—it is about the space the form occupies, the emotion it evokes, and the silence it commands."
— Jonathan Chorn
Every sculpture begins as an idea sketched in clay. Working from live models and classical study, the form emerges through intuition and discipline.
The original sculpture is refined over months, capturing gesture, proportion, and the emotional weight of the subject in pliable earth.
Using the lost-wax casting method, the clay original is transformed into a hollow bronze shell—preserving every detail for eternity.
Jonathan pushes boundaries by integrating steel, glass, and found materials—creating works that exist between tradition and innovation.
